The former capital of the Danube Monarchy boasts world-class museums with the richest collections of every artistic movement. The museums are housed in palaces; the architecture and magnificent décor of the exhibition halls rival the collections themselves.

The Museum of Art History is a palace built by the architects Semper and Hasenauer, designed specifically to house collections of Old Master paintings, ancient antiquities, and a one-of-a-kind Kunstkammer. All these treasures were amassed by the Habsburgs over the centuries.

The Belvedere Gallery is located in one of Vienna’s most beautiful palaces, built by the architect Lucas von Hildebrandt for Prince Eugene of Savoy. Today, at the Belvedere, you can trace the history of art from the Middle Ages to the early 20th century.

The Albertina Gallery is a former palace of the Austrian archdukes. In addition to its collection of 20th-century art movements, it also features magnificent palace halls in the Empire style.

On my tours, academic information is combined in equal measure with historical context using the “view of the epoch” method, and sometimes with “what museums keep silent about.”
